Doug and I received such a generous gift from Kate and Rob -- a card to use at the elegant restaurant 1789 in Georgetown. We went last night -- the night before Doug's birthday, so it seemed like a nice occasion. We arrived and were greeted by two valets -- so nice not to have to park in Georgetown. You can see how inviting the entrance is in this pic:I forgot my camera, of course, but we were in an elegant colonial-flavored room with a raging fire in the fireplace -- and it's still so cold around here, that it was welcoming. The restaurant has several levels with different rooms, but we were on the first floor. The service was as you might expect -- very nice but unobtrusive. Doug had Big Eye Tura Tartare to begin, and I had Wellfleet Oyster Gratin. We tasted from each other, and enjoyed both. Then we split the Beaver Creek Quail Saltimobocca -- cute little pieces of quail on bones, plus wild rice and baby hedgehog mushrooms -- everything was kind of miniature and pretty...very tasty too.
Doug had the rack of lamb for his main course and I had river trout...but the trout seemed thicker than I ever saw coming out of a river...anyway, very good. The thing I liked most about my meal was the horseradish -- not what you would expect, but a little slice of the root without all that pickling. I'm going to look for it at Whole Foods. Then we didn't really have room, but we did dessert -- Doug had a pretty chocolate mousse thing and I had apple strudel with candied walnuts and ice cream. Doug also enjoyed a few wines, including a dessert wine coupled with this mousse.
Thanks for such a nice gift, Kate and Rob!
