Garden update starts on a tragic note -- see the tomatoes? I'd been watching them getting ripe, planning on a great salad in a few days..and it looks to me like birds ate them! There were tell-tale white globs of poop on one of the ravished tomatoes. Well, this will not stand. My job today is to make a little scarecrow -- I have lots of fabric and a sewing machine -- I'll try to do something scary.
Swiss chard is lovely.
Jalapeno peppers seem to be untouched.
Beautiful purple eggplant -- I bet we can harvest this in a few days.
Beginnings of a white eggplant.
Cucumbers -- we have three vines and I bet we'll get at least 50 -- they are amazingly prolific.

Overall, I think the garden has been a big success. The planters have worked out so well. Some things have done better than others -- peas started out strong, and then just gave up. Green beans made for one dinner, but now they're gone -- I wonder if the plants will make more...not sure. The tomatoes have turned into beautiful lush plants, just hope we can protect against varmints. The herbs have also done pretty well -- chives are going strong, along with basil, parsley, thyme, marjoram, and cilantro. Rosemary grows like a weed around here, but mine was in a pot that wasn't draining, so I've replanted it in a better location.
